Convocation

in "excitedly" writing about my car accidents, i left out the most significant event of my life in the past two months. my convocation. waaaaaaaarrrgghhh. just saying it feels so good. MY convocation. ahahahaa.

at last.. it was my turn. on the 23rd of August 2008, i was presented a scroll confirming that i have graduated from Uniten with a Bachelor's Degree with Honours in Software Engineering. it felt so good. convocation is one of the things that i've always prayed i wouldn't die without. hm i may seem overly excited. but i think i had a very good reason to.

eighteen was the age when i got the chance to see a convocation ceremony for the first time. i was in asasi UM and if i could remember well, it was July 2002. Pusat Asasi Sains campus is situated somewhere up the hill on a ridiculous earth surface UM chose to build a university. it was always either u walk up the hill or down. it was really hard to find a flat ground there. but anyways.. our campus was also right beside the main hall of UM. erm what was it called.. hm maybe DTC (Dewan Tuanku Canselor). or.. maybe not. i really cant remember. it was lunch time and i was eating at the cafeteria with my friends when i realized how busy it was at the hall one day. it was convocation and from where i sat at that time, i could see the whole activity around the hall. i saw carnival, flowers, families, people taking pictures everywhere, looking superb in their robes and mortars and the thing that made smile was when i saw a group of graduates throwing their mortars into the air with a loud and long "woooooooooooohooooooooo" sound. i suddenly got a weird rush of feelings inside me. and for the next few days after that, i kept coming to the cafeteria at lunch and even after classes just to sit and watch them. somehow it made me feel happy and i was starting to imagine and hope for my turn.

that year and a few years after that was my so called "dark years". hm it's best that i dun elaborate on it here. it would be a novel. but basically.. those were the years in my life when i had faced a lot of failures and my life was upside down. due to that, i was quite "delayed" compared to my other friends and i only got to start with my real degree in Uniten at the age of 21. while trying hard to get the highest degree i could in my 3 years of studies there, i just had to bear looking at my friends' convocation pictures in their friendsters. until it was my time, i think i have seen "all" of them graduated. well actually not just graduated, some of them were married, engaged, started working and even have babies of their own! it just kills me to see those people who once run around with me in school, having made so many further steps in their lives while i was still stuck there trying to grasp the first milestone of my life. so that was why i was so excited. after so many years in waiting, so much pain, so many obstacles.. it was finally my turn.

i made a really big deal of my convocation. i wanted everything to be perfect. after a lot of surveying, i finally found myself an outfit that i love. it cost me quite a fortune. i mean.. on regular basis, i wont buy an outfit with that kind of pricetag. i also got myself a good branded pair of shoes and i even hired a photographer. huhuu.. for two reasons - one; my family doesn't own a camera and two; i was the only "weirdo" in the family who likes to take pictures and i guess that's enough to describe how reliable the rest of them are when holding a camera. they would really just "hold" them. my photographer wasn't a professional one though. he was an amateur, a sweet little boy whom i believe would one day achieve his goal in becoming a professional photographer. his work was superb. somehow, he managed to catch all the special moments of the most important event of my life. just as i wanted.

finally the convocation day came. there wasn't a need for a snooze, i woke up to the first alarm of my clock. at 7.30am i was already in the line together with my friends and other graduates outside Dewan Sri Sarjana, Uniten. hahaha. i just have to mention its new name. we all looked tremendous! everything went smoothly according to the schedule. my favourite part was "Perarakan Masuk Graduan" which was the moment when all the graduates paraded into the hall, all smart with our robes and mortars with smiles on our faces and all eyes on us. hehe. after that, we were basically sitting and being tortured with speeches after speeches as we waited long hours for our turn to go up and take our scroll. at last, the time came. as i was standing by the stage with a pounding heart while our names were being called one by one, i dun know why but suddenly everything went wrong. my mortar felt loose, my shoes were loose.. it was almost like i've shrinked out of nervousness. but alhamdulillah, everything went smooth. i didn't embarrass myself or anything up there. in fact, it was phenomenal! hehehe.

so after that, we went out of the hall. wow.. it felt like we had spent ages inside there. after that.. we took lotsa pictures with our friends and family. and yes of course, me and my friends took the chance to throw our mortars in the air. but it wasn't on that day. it was on the previous day during our photo sessions with my photographer. so the day ended as night falls and i suddenly felt so sad and worried. in the excitement of convocation, i forgot the reality that lies upon it. the convocation officially marks the end of our journeys in uniten a.k.a the end of the best moment in my life. the life i've had there, the friends, the studies, the hardship.. everything holds a special meaning to me and definitely the memory that i will hold tight to myself for the rest of my life.

in my blogs after this, from time to time, i will try to document about my friends one by one. uniten had really been a great time in my life that i refuse to forget it no matter what. even if i were destined to lose my memory one day (god forbid..) at least i could read back my posts and learn of the people who had made a significant trail in my life.
